Many moons ago when I first tried to jump on the healthy food band wagon, (and I've jumped off a few times...currently back on) I have found these to be some delicious snacks and dare I say "diet foods". But, any chubby girl will tell you, if it isn't good, we won't try it. So, whatever it's worth, the following win my "so good a chubby girl would eat it" award.
Lower Sodium Sara Lee Chicken or Turkey Breast. I can not even tell this deli meat is low-sodium. The great thing is, you can buy it freshly sliced at the deli counter or you can find the same brand pre-sliced in a container. Great and healthy choice for a sandwich. It comes in a variety of flavors - chicken breast, honey baked turkey, etc.
Gobble, gobble, not oink, oink bacon. Let me give you the skinny on turkey bacon...it has a great flavor. But, if you are expecting it to taste anything like regular bacon, it won't. It still tastes good, but I find it best to think of turkey bacon and regular pork bacon to be two totally separate items in terms of taste (and, let's face it - fat and calories).
Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges. If you love cheese (and are perhaps a fan of cream cheese), you will love this little treasure. They come in various flavors (onion flavor, Swiss, etc.) and also come in cute little pre-packaged wedges - perfect for snacking. And the original is only 50 calories per wedge. I believe the light is 35 calories. And again...it actually tastes GOOD. I pair mine with Kashi TLC crackers...
Go team Kashi! I'm not sure if you are familiar with the Kashi brand, but pretty much everything they make is loaded with fiber (good for keeping you full, not to mention health benefits) and made from whole grains. These crackers are great to pair with whatever goodness you like to snack on.
Sandwich Thins. Whoever thought of these are genius I tell you, pure genius. First of all, it tastes good. Secondly, it is packed with fiber. Thirdly, it's only 100 calories. And fourthly, did I mention they taste good? I use them for everything - a breakfast sandwich, turkey burger, regular sandwich for lunch/dinner...and the list goes on.
Egg Beaters. The average American probably knows what Egg Beaters are. You've probably seen someone in a Jazzi make a purchase of these pseudo-eggs. Don't have that disgusted look on your face - They are not just the elderly person's egg anymore. While you roll your eyes, I will tell you that they are great for making an omelet. And they are less in fat and cholesterol. Which means, maybe when you're old, you can actually walk to the grocery store and not have to use a Jazzi. Just sayin'.
Others worthy of mentioning:
-100 calorie individually wrapped packs of guacamole found in the produce section. The perfect portion controlled size!
-Turkey kielbasa - great mixed with brown rice, sauteed onions and green peppers and a little Cajun seasoning. A Cajun dish that pretty healthy.
-Kashi cereal bars (I get the 100 calories ones because sometimes the calories can get out of control). But, indeed they don't taste like cardboard flavored oats.
-Sugar free pudding (it's good topped with a little sugar free Cool-Whip)
And finally...Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey Ice Cream. Wait, what was that? You didn't know it was a diet food? (Ok...actually it isn't a diet food. BUT, it is really great for reducing the pain of a sore throat when honey, lemon, tea, whiskey, cough drops, cayenne pepper and all that other crap won't do. Trust me. It works.)
Happy Snacking.
